Bringing new life to San Francisco’s playgrounds, creating spaces where imagination and community can grow…
Inclusivity in sports is vital. Yet equipment for adaptive sports remains an expensive barrier to entry. We are proud to help raise funds to give opportunities for people with disabilities to engage in competitive and recreational activities, helping to build confidence, independence, and a sense of community. Beyond physical health, wheelchair sports also foster teamwork, challenge stereotypes about disability, and create a more inclusive environment where everyone can participate and thrive.
In 2014, the Recreation and Park Commission appointed a Citizen Task Force to determine which playgrounds were most in need of renovation. The Task Force prioritized six Tier 1 and seven Tier 2 playgrounds for renovation based on four criteria:
The initiative has fully completed 11 of the 13 playgrounds and are open to the public. Of the two remaining playgrounds, Stern Grove is slated to begin construction in late 2024, while Buchanan Mall Playground has been incorporated into a larger renovation of the park and is currently in design phase. SFFSR raised funds to contribute to each of these playgrounds. Click to view our full project map to see the playgrounds, which include locations at Koret, Stern Grove, and more.
All children deserve a safe, imaginative place to play outside.
