Inclusivity in sports is vital. Yet equipment for adaptive sports remains an expensive barrier to entry. We are proud to help raise funds to give opportunities for people with disabilities to engage in competitive and recreational activities, helping to build confidence, independence, and a sense of community. Beyond physical health, wheelchair sports also foster teamwork, challenge stereotypes about disability, and create a more inclusive environment where everyone can participate and thrive.
With funding for ten sport wheelchairs, a basketball court shot clock, uniforms, and transportation, we’re proud to have supported this important cause. And furthermore, the sport wheelchairs will be available to sign out for free from the Gene Friend rec center, giving all community members a chance to use this vital equipment for themselves. SF Rec & Park has also gone on to support wheelchair tennis in San Francisco as well using this equipment!
Led by city officials and community members, the groundbreaking ceremony marked a significant milestone in the revitalization of SoMa. With a blend of public funding and community input, the project is set to foster a stronger, healthier neighborhood, and create lasting benefits for generations to come. The new Gene Friend Recreation Center is expected to be a cornerstone of community life in San Francisco.
The Gene Friend Rec Center is SoMa’s only indoor rec facility and as such is an invaluable safe haven for youth.
